She is cute, smart and comes from a great family, so when she informed me two years ago about her desire to invest in developing the poor sanitary conditions in Lagos State; i had a nostalgic moment and my admiration for her grew.
Lagos State is replete with examples of areas run-over by dirt. The slumps of Makoko and Dustbin Estate are good examples. The Lagos State government has been very conscious of the poor state of the environment and with institution’s like the Lagos State Waste Management Authority(LAWMA) the government has been tackling the refuse pandemic. However, despite the Lagos State government efforts, it is only a secondary control measure to a primary problem. The root cause of the unclean nature of Lagos State and indeed the rest of Nigeria is the habits and attitudes of the people. The culture of dropping litter on the roads and the disregard of safety measures in the disposal of waste is deeply entrenched in the attitudes of Nigerians. It therefore suffices to say that a permanent remedy is a cure of the mind.
