On Sunday, January 15th, 2012 Kids’ Clean Club collaborated and supported Wecyclers (pronounced - "We" in place of "Re" in Recyclers), a crowd-sourced recycling platform from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) that harnesses the power of urban communities to reclaim their neighbourhoods from unmanaged waste. They sensitize residents of urban slums to collect recyclable materials by providing social goods in exchange.
In this part of the world, Kids' Clean Club is one of the few organizations who tops in the list of Non-profit Charities who entrench and propagate environmental, physical and mental cleanliness in the society, especially in children. These same criteria served as a mutual value that facilitated the collaboration with MIT on this project which took place at Ahmadiyya field in Ebute Meta, Yaba, Lagos.
Highlights from the events include;
- Children and adults trooped out in mass to submit waste materials like used sachets, plastic bottles, cans, polythene, nylon, cartons and more. These wastes were sorted and packaged for proper eco-friendly disposal.
- A submission register was opened which gave every community member a chance to win raffle prizes like plastic buckets, thermo coolers, water bottles, mobile phone, shirts, recharge cards, camera, mugs, LAWMA handbooks and more.
- Kids' Clean Club founder&CEO, Doyinsola Ogunye, gave a short and interactive lecture on recycling, physical and mental cleanliness. She asked questions and gave out free LAWMA handbooks to participating children.
- Some parents, siblings and neighbours of these participating children were also present. Music, snacks and drinks were on ground for everyone.
The event which started by 10AM ended before 1PM...And the Wecyclers team had to leave for their next sensitization exercise in Ajegunle, Lagos.
Wecyclers has been shortlisted in the semi-final list of MIT Entrepreneurship Competition for the projects they execute. Visit the following links for more details.
